Other than building aerobic fitness the big thing at present I am working on is hip rotation and power with swiss ball work. Runners and skiers with fluid hips tend to have the strongest stride, watch a video of Kenenisa Bekele and it is quickly apparent that he is doing something different from what most of us do every day. He floats around the track, hardly seeming to touch it.
In an effort to run like him, instead of feeling like I'm muscling my body along, pounding the ground and working for each forward push, I am focusing on hip power from the pelvis and glutes.
Second to this is continuing to build core strength specific to running and skiing with battle rope exercises. As a runner and a skier, you can’t afford to have a weak core and rope training works your entire core from the upper abs to your glutes and quads, both stabilizing spinal movement and applying power from the core.
The combination of fluid hip movement and application of power from the core muscles will make for a strong stride and ultimately more speed:-)
