Went down to Canmore this past weekend for Frozen Thunder for my first ski race and second ski of the season and I felt it the next day! I was little light on the grip for first two rounds but corrected for last two and felt surprisingly comfortable skiing at a high pace.
With the Kings Court format it provide the chance to race all four rounds and all four rounds were needed to bring things around.
Back to the spikes this weekend for the Stewart Cup down at Hawrelak Park.
Recently took the fitness out for a spin in Toronto for the National Marathon Championships and while fitness was good going through the first 10k split in 37 minutes with an average heart rate of 143, the back was just not ready for the longer effort.
Even with the DNF I am happy with the effort and the progress we've made. Since returning have made a few adjustments to strength moving from double leg squatting to single leg squats to engage more of the deep hip stabilizers.
Having reduced pace early in the marathon knowing the back was not ready allowed me the opportunity to return home able to resume training. The focus now will be on XC running season and the upcoming Nordic season with strength / tempo combo workouts for running and strength / short interval combo workouts for roller ski workouts.
With training winding down the pieces seem to be falling into place, the short tempo runs feel like I am floating and the intervals seem to fly by without notice. Last nights 14 x 3 minutes with 1:30 rest felt effortless and with good speed.
